Head Start Prototype Green Child Care Center
|
Working
with the Economic Opportunity Commission in
San Luis Obispo, California, a prototype child
care facility was designed and presented at
the National MS Head Start Conference in Albuquerque,
New Mexico. The presentation explored native
landscaping, potential use of green materials,
exterior and interior daylighting benefits
as well as energy and water efficiency. A
prototype was then developed based on the
average size of Head Start Facilities in the
region and a proposed LEED™ rating was
established.
As a result of the Prototype Design, a Facilities
Workgroup was formed among the 20 or so Head
Start Grantees nationwide to develop green
design guidelines for Head Start Child Care
Centers. Working under contract with the Academy
for Educational Development (AED) in Washington,
D.C., we are evaluating reduced operating
costs through increased energy and water efficiency
as well as looking at the effects of daylighting
and Indoor Environmental Quality on children’s
learning environment. The resulting guidelines
will be available for use by all the Head
Start Grantees nationwide in all areas of
Head Start. |
