Project Info:

The Berea College Farm is the principal laboratory for the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR). Established ~140 years ago, the College Farm has served the college well by providing labor opportunities for students to pay for college and living expenses, producing food for student and community consumption, giving students practical agricultural experience, and serving as a real-world laboratory for agricultural courses. The old Broom craft building, which stood vacant for many years and was in poor condition, was renovated into the new Berea College Farm Store. The renovated space includes a meat processing area, a multi-purpose processing kitchen, storage, coolers and freezer space, and a retail area. Sustainable design strategies incorporated include high efficiency building envelope enhancements, daylighting, natural ventilation and a geothermal HVAC system- all of which improve energy efficiency and comfort. Salvaged and green materials were utilized in construction and the exterior appearance of the structure was largely preserved.
