Gateway Arch National Park Visitor Center & Museum

The Gateway Arch National Park is the country’s most visited national park and is home to the Gateway Arch, The Gateway Arch National Park Visitor Center & Museum. The park is undergoing a $380 million renovation that will connect, invigorate and expand the park’s grounds and museums. Hellmuth + Bicknese was hired as the LEED Consultant by the architect (Cooper Robertson & Partners, New York, NY) for the renovation of the Museum of Westward Expansion and the Gateway Arch Visitor Center. The key transformative component of the project is a 48,500 sf addition featuring a new below-grade expansion of the museum, new entry and lobby for the Museum Visitor Center, and additional educational spaces, offices, and restrooms. The majority of the existing 103,546 sf is being renovated- including exhibit spaces, tram lobby, theaters, café, museum stores, restrooms and other service spaces. The project site is approximately 8 acres ranging from the top of the steps east of the Arch and west to the new "Park Over the Highway" that will connect the Old Courthouse with the Arch Grounds to the riverfront in one continuous greenway.

H+B’s consultation work involves coordinating stakeholders to integrate LEED goals within the overall project plans of the large and complex team of owners and designers- led by Cooper Robertson & Partners, Landscape Architect and Arch Grounds planner Michael van Valkenburgh Associates in Brooklyn, NY, and museum designer Haley Sharpe Design in Leicester, UK, in addition to a wide range of consultants. The owner is the National Park Service, the private partner is the City Arch River 2015 Foundation (CAR), the project manager is the NPS Denver Service Center, the exhibit manager is the NPS Harper's Ferry Center.
