Project Info:

The Moving Forward Initiative, envisioned by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) along with Energy Systems Network (ESN) was created to focus on reducing utility and transportation costs for lower income residents by creating very energy efficient housing in walkable/bikeable communities combined with an electric car share program such as Blue Indy or EverCar. The resulting 43-unit, 68,000 SF, $10 million affordable housing project is in a tech-park in Bloomington, Indiana, providing local job opportunities. The project features a 500kW photovoltaic system, daylighting, natural ventilation, high-performance energy-efficient building envelope, green infrastructure with a greywater/rainwater toilet flushing system. Solutions developed by working closely with Duke Energy include a micro-grid design with battery-storage system for added resiliency to the community space and emergency power for the residents. The project is attempting to obtain Living Building Challenge Net Zero Energy Building Certification.
