Based on the historic significance of the mills and silos and the strong identification with the surrounding neighborhood, H+B has recommended retaining the bulk of the original buildings and silos.

The larger mill buildings lend themselves well to adaptive re-use due to their structural configuration. The silos however are more of a challenge but serve as a sculptural and iconic barrier between the

railroad tracks on the far side of the site. Although the large amount of square footage is difficult for a smaller city like Springfield to absorb, the flexibility of the buildings make a multi-use strategy possible.
