As the District Architect for the Monarch Fire Protection District H+B completed several projects including a new roof at House 1, a study for a new fueling station at House 5, and House 4 a new 12,000 sq. ft. three bay fire station in West St. Louis County. For House 4 H+B held several meetings with local residents to involve them in the design process. Main concerns were noise, landscaping, and fit within the neighborhood. The design features low energy use, daylighting, on-site stormwater management, and native landscaping. To adopt best practices of environmental site and building design and to demonstrate exemplary community stewardship the Monarch Fire Protection District elected to design the site to conform to the World Wildlife Federation’s Workplace Habitat Guidelines and the building to conform to the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Green Building Rating SystemTM. Board member Rick Gans praised H+B for going well beyond what the district has experienced from other architects for their inclusive process which involved the community and the firefighters.
