Project Info:

The College School Adventure Center is situated along the LaBarque Creek, part of the Meramac River system. During the programming phase, H+B and The College School determined needs for restroom facilities, activity/learning areas, and a future classroom building. To protect the health of the pristine LaBarque Creek and to reflect the school’s commitment to sustainability, a composting toilet system was planned for the area. The master plan takes advantage of the site’s natural features, including areas for repelling off the bluffs, pine tree climbing, and a tree-top walk to teach the students about nature and sustainability while also minimizing impact on the site. Agriculture is an important part of the adventure center curriculum featuring a garden, vineyard, and orchard.

A preliminary feasibility study was conducted to help the school assess possible properties for the adventure center. A solar analysis was completed in order to site the classroom building and pavilion to optimize the energy generated by PV panels amidst the dense forest site.
