was awarded an Outstanding Achievement in the "Environmental
Innovation" category from the Missouri Waste
Coalition for the design of the net-zero waste, The
Living Learning Center, in Eureka, MO. Dan Hellmuth
was selected to present on the various sustainable
features of the facility. To meet the strict requirements
of the Living Building Challenge, the final building
must have a net zero carbon footprint for construction,
as well as net zero water and energy usage. A 19kW
roof-mounted photovoltaic array provides power for
the building and systems whilie rainwater is harvested
for re-use as potable water. Other components of the
net zero water usage include composting toilets, graywater
recycling and a stormwater management plan that utilizes
rain gardens, pervious pavement and dry creekbeds
to capture and treat on-site stormwater. The siding
of the building is constructed from Eastern Red Cedar
trees and flooring has been made from hard maple trees
all havested on-site as part of a native forest restoration
project. |
